Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, but for Lighthouse Family Retreat is it just another day of the 365 days of the year that they are helping to bring joy to families with children fighting cancer.  Cancer doesn't come one month out of the year, but can bring months to years of suffering to children and their families.

There are many ways to help.  Donating money for research is one very popular and very beneficial way to help.  Then, there is giving the family with a sick child an opportunity to try to forget the terrible disease for 1 week.   Lighthouse Family Retreat provides this service. They provide a free vacation for these families with lots of play activities at the beautiful Santa Rosa Beach in Florida, bonding with other families with the same challenges and lots of helpful therapy for the adults.

If you are interested in participating from either side - as a volunteer/donater or as a family in need, please contact Lighthouse.  (678-290-2655)

Char...The 4 letter dirty word in Hot Melt

Stop the Char

Is the frequency of your glue melter issues becoming the center of production meeting conversations?

Do you have a solid Preventive Maintenance (PM) Schedule in place?

If you have a glue melter that is charred to the point you are discussing the purchase of a new unit....... then STOP.  Keystone has an alternative.  We can rebuild the melter and you can begin with a clean slate.  If you are unable to run production without a melter, we can offer an exchange to reduce the time your line is down for the install.

After you have a clean glue melter, implement a regular PM Schedule.  It is recommended that the glue melter be purged every 3 to 6 months, based on your usage and type of glue.  All filters should be changed at this time also.
Our DIY video can provide more details.

To reduce char build up:

  • Set temperatures of the hoses, applicator heads and glue tank by recommendations made by the adhesive company on the adhesive specs. Some adhesives will char at temperatures that others will not.
  • If the melter has a stand by feature, program unit to shut down when not in use. Heating the same adhesive for long periods of time breaks down the adhesive and may compromise its ability to adhere.
  • Keep the glue tank as full as possible.  When tank is not full, char will build up where there is a thin film of glue on the sides of the tank.
  • Keep dry adhesive in a covered container to prevent contaminants from entering the adhesive.  Auto feeders are a great alternative to keep glue tank full and provide a safer environment for employees.

Please let us know if you have questions or need a quote on a rebuilt glue melter and/or parts.

Glue machines are a simple component of your packaging line and issues due to char do not need to be your focus.

Wash Down Glue Hose for Wet Packaging Environments

Many manufacturing facilities are mandated by the FDA to periodically wash down equipment. If you are one of these facilities, you may have had or are having various electrical issues with non-wash down equipment/parts.

Speaking specifically from the area of the adhesive melters, we are very aware of the downtime that can be caused by water entering parts.

If you are required to wash down your packaging lines, you should be using glue hoses and glue applicators that are made to be water resistant. This will reduce your downtime due to electrical shortages.

Importance of Water Resistance

When a hose is compromised by water, water enters and soaks the insulation, which is wrapped around the heater wire of the entire length of the hose. This can cause the hose to either cool below set temperature or cause an electrical short, which will destroy the hose. Both scenarios cause expensive downtime.

Water Resistant Products from Keystone

We manufacture water resistant cordsets, glue applicators and glue hoses for a fraction of the cost charged by the OEMs.

Verify you are using the proper parts on your equipment to insure the best performance of your packaging lines.

If you need help, let us know. Contact our experts online or call us at 800-235-8090.

Great Places to Fish - Share your best fish pics

Whether you prefer saltwater or fresh water fishing, the sport is relaxing and satisfying.  My Grandfather taught me to fresh water fish at an early age in the family farm pond.  Maybe you have some fond memories of fishing with a loved one you can share.  It was always so satisfying catching a bucket full of brim or crappie to take back to Grandma for her to "ooooo" and "aaahhh" over and then to fry up.  Granddad would show me how to scale the fish and would show me all the inside parts of the fish, including the beating heart. Today, many of our children miss out on the basics of the world, such as this.  I believe these kinds of experiences in life teach respect for life in general.

See if you have visited any of these fishing sweet spots:

Keystone we will be giving away a $500 Bass Pro gift certificate in December.

Char Buildup in Glue Melter

What are the causes of char in glue melters and what can you do to reduce the buildup?

Wouldn't it be nice to reduce the pesky char that clogs your nozzles and shuts down a production line.  Sounds easy, right?!?

There are many variables that can attribute to this issue.  Make some observations of your production lines based on the list of Challenges below.  If you have any of these challenges below, you are prone to have glue melter clogging issues, which means possible expensive downtime.

Dry adhesive are stored in open container.
Contaminants fall into the container which may end up in the glue melter.
Store dry adhesives in a sealed container with a scoop used only for that container

Glue melter is not filled with fresh adhesive until almost empty.
Surface areas of glue tank that are exposed to air will burn and char.
Coach line operators to keep glue tank 1/2 to 3/4 full of adhesive.  If needed, attach a light or sound device to a level sensor in glue tank to notify line operator to fill glue tank. Add a sealed dry adhesive feeder, which, not only, provides a clean environment, but also increases safeness for filling glue tank

Glue melter is not in use and is running at operating temperatures.
Continuous heating of adhesive at operating temperatures can compromise adhesive viability.  Any areas of the tank exposed to air for many hours can form char from residual adhesive burning.
Program a setback temperature for periods when melter is not in use or turn off..  Program start up 40 minutes prior to line start up.

Glue Melter lid is either missing or open all the time.
Contaminants in the air can enter the adhesive in the  tank causing clogs.  Some contaminants can burn and cause char when mixing with the adhesive.  An example would be box dust, product dust (flour/sugar), product packaging       from above (bottom caps/pop tabs), etc.
Verify lids are present and closed, except during filling. Coach staff.

Tank filters and inline filters are not changed often.
Collection of a large amount of debris on filters will eventually cause clogging due to pieces of debris breaking off and bypassing filter.
Add changing filters to your Preventive Maintenance schedule. There is very little expense and this will prevent costly downtime.  Depending on hours of use of the glue melter, add flushing the glue melter to your PM schedule. This will extend the life of your glue melter.

Let us know if you need help with determining a PM schedule on the glue melters and if you need parts.

Reduce Glue Nozzle Clogging

Are you having consistent issues with nozzles clogging on your glue applicators?

Verify your inline and tank filters are clean.  A little time in preventive maintenance will go a long way in preventing unplanned and costly downtime.  Over time contaminants will form in the adhesive tank and hose, break off and flow to the applicator heads.  Both the tank filter and the inline filters can catch most of the debris and reduce clogging of the nozzles.

Tank Filters for Nordson

KNTF104 - Mdl VII/IX
KNTF106 - Mdl 2000/2200
KNTF130 - Mdl IV//XIV
KNTF578 - Mdl 2300/300
KNFH0226 - Mdl ProBlue 4/7/10 & DuraBlue 10/16

For a variety of inline filters click here

Remember for inline filters, the smaller number mesh size means less restriction. Generally, you want more restrictive mesh on smaller diameter nozzle orifices and less restrictive on larger size nozzle orifices.  If unsure which filter mesh size you need, please call us and we can assist.

Don't be the one who cost your company thousands of dollars in downtime by neglecting to change glue melter filters!!!!
